REMA was born in Benin City, Nigeria in 2000.  In 2019, he released an EP that was praised by former President Obama, Drake, Rihanna, and others, and quickly became a representative of Afrobeat. Rema released the original version of "Calm Down" as a single from his solo debut album Rave & Roses in February 2022. The remix featuring Selena Gomez was released in August 2023, and the official music video was released the following month in September. "Calm Down" with Selena Gomez topped the US Afrobeats Songs chart for 58 consecutive weeks and recorded 1 billion streams, attracting attention from around the world. This is the first time that an African artist has topped 1 billion streams on Spotify as a lead artist. "Calm Down", which became a crossover hit, also achieved a good record on the US Billboard chart. It topped the Adult Pop Airplay chart dated May 13, 2024, giving Rema his first No. 1 spot. It also topped the Radio Songs and Pop Airplay charts. It also dominated the Rhythmic Airplay chart for four weeks from May to June. It peaked at No. 3 on the all-genre Hot 100, making it Rema's first and Selena's ninth top 10 song. In 2023, the song topped the Billboard Global Chart, and later reached No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 after a total of 40 weeks on the chart. This is the highest ranking an African song has ever been on the US Billboard Hot 100 in the past 50 years, and also the longest ranking. His songs incorporate Afro-Rave, Indian and Arabic music, rather than Afro-beat, which is not found in other artists, and have an exotic atmosphere and a rhythmic melody that makes your body move without your consent. His unrivaled pop sense is refreshing and fun. `Ozeba`, `Charm` and `Soundgasm` are other popular songs by Rema.
